Is The Times justified?

It is now.
The Times has instituted a sweeping but subtle redesign, to emphasize the difference between objective and subjective journalism. Straight news will remain, well, straight: laid out in justified columns, with even margins on the left and right. Stories that have been colored by analysis, commentary or authorial whimsy will all receive the layout previously reserved for columns: a straight left margin and a ragged right one.
I don't even read it that much anymore, but still, I think it's a good thing.

"It sort of grew out the concern that we hear from some readers that feel that our coverage isn’t necessarily objective,” said Times design director Tom Bodkin. “Our sense is that they may get confused as to what stories are meant to have an individual voice, and which ones are straight news stories."

Wow! The first sentence sort've makes one hopeful they acknowledge their lack of objectivity and must correct that...but then the second sentence is so utterly patronizing I'm back to never reading the rag.

I'm just glad this posted. Blogger went all kerflewy (is that the correct spelling of kerflewy?) on me and I finally just closed the page while it was still trying to post.

Wait a minute -- what am I doing up so early?!

They could become a paper format of "Cross Fire". Just draw a line down the center of each page and for each news topic have rabid Liberal views on the left side of the page and rabid Conservative views on the right side of the page. Of course with lots of name calling and such.

Personally I'm not sure that an "objective" news organization exists on this planet. Bias is always present - if not in the stories themselves then by the choice of stories they run.

Agree that there are always biases as individuals always enter the fray with presuppositions, philosphies, outlooks, etc. However, it is just so much more palatable if there is some honest acknowledgement of this basic truth from MSM.
