Cowering before the Law of Unintended Consequences!

On changing the definition of gender:
“This is something we hadn’t fully thought through, frankly,” said Dr. Thomas R. Frieden, the [New York] city’s health commissioner. “What the birth certificate shows does have implications beyond just what the birth certificate shows.”
Gee, ya think? Via Althouse whose remarks on the same city's outlawing of transfat says, "Of all the elitist regulations, this one takes the cake. And the pie crust."

Ahaha! It's a good day at the Althouse blog!

Even putting the moral issues aside, it seems like we would want accurate records. If someone was born male, then the birth certificate should show male. If the male then has a sex change then their current gender status could be female - although in my opinion she should actually be classified with some term that means "female via sex change". Just because they want to live as a female and had their man parts removed does not make them female. It is very strange to me that so many people would be in favor of actually altering the birth certificate and rewriting history about the individual.

That is an interesting point about prison - should an inmate who was male and had a sex change be in a male or female prison? Or vice versa? Ugh - it is sad that we even have to think about such things in our society.
